Have a firewall between your computer and the internet.
If you are running Windows XP with Service Pack 2, then from the control panel select “security” and make sure the firewall is set to “on”
What would be better is to have a router with a NAT firewall installed between your internet connection and your computer. I use and recommend the Linksys WRT54GL

Free Spy-Ware Software
Everyone should have spyware/adware detection software on their pc. The software I use, and install on all the pc's I work on is Lavasoft's Ad-Aware Free. Which can be downloaded from download.com through a link on Lavasoft's website
